It’s safe to say that TikTok is absolutely smashing the social media game right now. With content ranging from viral dance routines, trending songs/audios, and simply everyday people making fun and engaging content, it is downright addictive. The beauty of TikTok is that you never quite know what you’re going to get. During the lockdown and most of the quarantine last year, it was one of the things that kept so many of us sane. If we’re being honest, we may or may not have spent hours a day down the rabbit hole of food TikTok. Definitely not us.
From the Nacho Table trend to Banana Bread to Whipped Coffee to Baked Feta Pasta, we were tempted to try these trends out for ourselves. One of the great things about finding recipes on TikTok is that they aren’t perfectly curated videos made by “professional food bloggers.” But rather they are made by normal people and home chefs who genuinely care about sharing good-tasting food.
TikTok is filled with thousands of food-related hashtags and short tutorials. But how do you know which ones are worth trying? Here are five of the top trending food recipes on TikTok that we think are genuinely worth your time. Plus, they are relatively easy to follow!
1. Baked oatmeal
First up on the list may be controversial to some, but Baked Oatmeal has become extremely popular on TikTok. There are hundreds of versions and variations to try. Now if you are a passionate oatmeal lover, these recipes are definitely a fun way to spruce up your oatmeal game. However, we realize that some people just don’t like oatmeal. And that’s totally okay. But those who argue oatmeal is flavourless and boring are no doubt just making it wrong.
Instead of just popping your oatmeal in the microwave with some water and cinnamon, spruce it up by incorporating delicious flavour combinations and toppings. We like chocolate chip cookie dough baked oats or jam doughnut baked oats. There are countless recipes on TikTok you can follow (One of our favourite oatmeal TikToker’s is @traceoats). The best part about baked oatmeal is that once you have the base recipe, you can let your creative juices flow and use any toppings/ingredients you like.
2. Pesto eggs
Following along the breakfast route, Pesto Eggs are another recipe that recently went viral on TikTok. This is due to the simplicity and deliciousness of the method and ingredients. Pretty much everyone has a carton of eggs in their refrigerator. And although pesto may be something you might have to run out to get at the grocery store, there are countless versions available.
The name of this recipe says it all. You are literally cooking your eggs in pesto. Bye-bye boring old butter or oil, hello flavorful pesto sauce that will seriously elevate your breakfast game. We’ve made this recipe numerous times, especially when we have little time for breakfast and need to whip up something quick.
Simply add pesto to your frying pan (measure with your heart), crack your eggs straight into the pan, and cook your eggs just the way you like them- fried, scrambled, sunnyside up, over medium, etc. Since pesto is made up of mostly oil, you can use it as a cooking fat to scramble or fry your eggs in the skillet.
They don’t even need to be seasoned since there is already so much flavour and richness from the pesto. But it’s really up to you (we’re big spice fans so we like to add red pepper flakes). Serve up your eggs with a side of toast and a cup of coffee and you’ve got yourself a satisfying breakfast. It’s really that easy!
3. Tortilla wrap fold
A recipe that truly is so versatile, we cannot tell you how many times we’ve used the tortilla wrap fold for an easy lunch or dinner. Who would have thought that cutting one slit into a wrap would be such a game-changer?
This fold “hack” is so genius yet so incredibly simple. Cut a slit halfway through whatever wrap you have on hand and divide it into four quadrants. Then fill each section with your ingredients of choice. There are so many variations of this trend. Things like insane egg breakfast wraps, or vegetarian wraps filled with vegan chicken nuggets. And even dessert wraps stuffed with Nutella, peanut butter, marshmallow fluff, and banana.
The opportunities are endless, and this wrap hack is a great way to make a delicious meal out of whatever is lying around in your fridge. Get your wraps really crispy by frying them on a greased skillet or popping it in the panini press for a few minutes. The choice is yours!
4. Six-layer brownies
If you’re looking for an indulgent dessert to satisfy your sweet tooth, this six-layer brownie recipe is sure to do just that. Don’t get us wrong, brownies on their own are amazing. But take brownie batter and layer Nutella, more brownie batter, Oreos, Bischoff spread, and a final layer of brownie batter, and you’ve got yourself a dessert that will take your tastebuds to a whole other world. Best of all, you don’t even have to make the brownie batter from scratch. Simply use your favourite boxed brownie mix (Here’s our go-to).
We’ve made this recipe far too many times than we’d care to admit, but trust us on this one. It is oh so worth it. Who cares about calories anyway? Make this recipe the next time you’re asked to bring a dessert to a party. People will be seriously impressed by the combination of flavours in every bite. Seriously, we’re getting hungry just thinking about them!
5. Vegan buffalo cauliflower wings
The last recipe is made using an all-time favourite cooking appliance: the infamous air fryer. Now, if you’ve been on TikTok before you’ve definitely come across at least one or two air fryer recipes. From crispy vegetables to warm and gooey chocolate cookies, our motto is: When in doubt, stick it in the air fryer!
This recipe for Vegan Buffalo Cauliflower Wings is cooked to crispy perfection thanks to our handy dandy air fryer. Seriously. We don’t know what it is, but somehow cooking in an air fryer just makes foods taste that much better. It’s a personality trait at this point.
Simply combine flour, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, cayenne, and almond milk in a large bowl. Then, toss in your cauliflower and mix well. Bake in the air fryer at 375F for about 15 minutes, then coat them in buffalo sauce (Frank’s is the holy grail). Next, pop them back in the air fryer to bake at 375F for six more minutes or until crispy. You’ll thank us for this one!
