Top online TEFL employers for South African passport-holders

You asked for it, so here it is! We know as a South African, finding work as a TEFL teacher can seem almost impossible at times, but honestly, it’s not! Heaps of our South African TEFL graduates are happily teaching English overseas and online and you can too! We’ve dug deep for you to find the best online TEFL employers for South African teachers – enjoy!

PalFish

PalFish is a Beijing-based company that offer teaching through an iOS or Android app that you can install on your phone or tablet. They have 3 different types of tutors, General PalFish Teacher, PalFish Official Kids Course Teachers and PalFish Philippines Course Teachers. As a South African, you can apply to be a General PalFish teacher only. General PalFish teachers will be able to either teach one-on-one classes with no curriculum or teach to multiple students in a free-form live stream.

Requirements: To teach for PalFish as a general PalFish teacher there are no strict requirements.

SayABC

SayABC is super popular amongst South African TEFL teachers. They’re another Beijing-based company who focus on teaching English to Chinese learners aged between 5 and 12, in classes of up to 4 students. SayABC provide you with all of the learning materials you need for your lessons, so all you need to do is log on before your class, review the material and plan a suitable lesson around it. Your English classes are taught through the company’s own online platform, so you’ll need to make sure you have a laptop and webcam ready! Classes are generally held after school during the week and in the mornings on a weekend (Chinese time). As China is around 6 hours ahead of South Africa, this can work really well for you, as you’ll generally hold your lessons during the average working day.

Requirements: To teach for SayABC, you must be a native English-speaker, have a bachelor’s degree or higher and have either a TEFL qualification or over 1 years’ teaching experience.

iTutorGroup

iTutorGroup are a Taiwanese and Chinese company, so you’ll be teaching students from China, Japan and Taiwan – wow! Students for iTutorGroup vary in ages from children through to adults, so you’ll have plenty of variety in your lessons. iTutorGroup provide their tutors with all teaching materials and full lesson plans, so all you need to do is turn up and teach – easy! Unlike SayABC, as your students vary from country to country and in age, classes can be held at all times of the day, so it’s super flexible and you can work around your current schedule.

Requirements: iTutorGroup tutors must hold a bachelor’s degree or higher, a TEFL certificate and at least 1 years’ teaching experience. All teaching materials are provided.

Cambly

Cambly is a super popular online company for newly qualified TEFL teachers, as they boast some of the lowest tutor requirements on the market. Unlike a lot of other companies, Cambly doesn’t provide a formal teaching platform, generally Cambly tutors will use software such as Skype or Zoom to host their lessons. But the good news is, they do provide you with all of the teaching resources you need and full lesson plans, so again, all you need to do is turn up and teach!

Requirements:  As long as you’re fluent in English, you can apply to become a Cambly tutor.

Preply

Preply, began as a platform for tutors to help students with SAT prep. But in more recent years, they’ve evolved to offer lessons in nearly 50 different languages. So if you’re not a native-English speaker, you can teach both your native language and English to students – winner! Due to this, you’ll also find a huge variety in your students, their ages and where they are from, which makes it super easy for you to be flexible and work around your current schedule.

Requirements: Preply don’t list any specific requirements on their website

DaDa

DaDa is one of the leading online English teaching platforms in China and, much like SayABC, they teach Chinese students between the ages of 4 to 16 although only on a one-to-one basis. DaDa will provide you with all of the teaching resources you need to teach so you won’t have to take time out of your schedule to plan all of your lessons. The peak hours for lessons are from 6pm-9pm Beijing time on the weekdays and 9am-9pm Beijing time on the weekends so you’ll generally find your schedule is busiest between 12pm-3pm South Africa time during the week.

Requirements: To work for DaDa, you must be a native English speaker of any nationality, hold a bachelor’s degree or higher and have a TEFL certificate.
