We think the title speaks for itself, but today is all about teachers from around the world! Also known as International Teachers Day, World Teachers’ Day was established in 1994 to provide a day for us to focus on the educators of the world. The main aims of the day are to show appreciation to all the wonderful teachers out there and demonstrate to everyone the key role teachers play in childhood development, and society as a whole.
We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: Teachers are the backbone of any society.
Yes, we might be biased, but it doesn’t make it less true!
There would be no doctors, vets, lawyers, writers, or scientists if we didn’t have teachers. Teachers provide the knowledge and training that enables people to pursue these essential professions. They also play a key role in their students’ development and help to unlock their potential, so they can go on to live their dreams and become successful members of society.

And this is especially true of English teachers, as they enable their students to communicate with people from around the world. They are also giving their students the language skills to access jobs or further study abroad, so they have more opportunities in life – an amazing thing to be able to do!

1. EFL Teacher
EFL stands for English as a Foreign Language (TEFL is Teaching English as a Foreign Language) and this is a great option if you want to teach abroad in a classroom or teach online, either as a digital nomad while you travel the world or from the comfort of your own home! It’s also a great option if you’re looking for a way to top up your income and you need a job that can easily fit around your existing schedule. With TEFL you could be teaching students of a variety of different ages, from primary school age all the way through to adults, and a number of different cultural backgrounds, as there are people looking to learn English all over the world!
So, what does the role involve?
- Delivering English lessons that focus on developing students speaking, reading, and writing abilities
- Lesson planning
- Group and one-to-one lessons
- Creating and/or using engaging materials and activities to illustrate learning points (e.g. worksheets, flashcards, games etc.)
- Classroom management, ensuring maximum participation and minimal disruption
- Administering exams and/or other types of assessment of progress
- Providing feedback to students and monitoring progress

2. ESOL Teacher
ESOL stands for English for Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL is Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and this type of teaching is a great option if you want to be able to teach students in both non-English-speaking countries, like Thailand, South Korea, or Japan, AND English-speaking countries, like the UK, USA, or South Africa. It’s a career path that will really see you through every stage of your teaching career and the qualification that you obtain before you start will help you to edge out the competition in more lucrative TESOL locations (e.g. the Middle East).
So, what does the role involve?
- Delivering English lessons that focus on developing students speaking, reading, and writing abilities
- Lesson planning
- Group and one-to-one lessons
- Teaching mixed ability classes
- Creating and/or using engaging materials and activities to illustrate learning points (e.g. worksheets, flashcards, games etc.)
- Classroom management, ensuring maximum participation and minimal disruption
- Administering exams and/or other types of assessment of progress
- Providing feedback to students and monitoring progress
- Training workshops

3. Teaching Assistant
If you know you’d like to be in a classroom environment but don’t feel quite ready to be the lead teacher, and want to be able to assist with teaching a variety of subjects, then being a Teaching Assistant could be perfect for you.
Teaching Assistants are so important in ensuring the smooth running of classrooms and every day in this role will be different and varied. As a Teaching Assistant you’ll be able to provide one-to-one support to individual students, where a lead teacher might not have the capacity to, in order to ensure that they understand the tasks, remain engaged, and are able to get the most from their learning experience. This is so important in ensuring that every student is continually developing their knowledge and that no-one feels left behind.
So, what else does the role involve?
- Helping the lead teacher to prepare lesson materials and activities
- Setting up and clearing the classroom, before and after lessons
- Monitoring students’ progress, sharing findings with the lead teacher
- Supervising group activities
- Helping the lead teacher to manage classroom behaviour
- Safeguarding and reporting concerns to the lead teacher or relevant colleagues

4. Early Years Practitioner
If you’d prefer to support the development of children before they attend school, from 0-5 years old, then becoming an Early Years Practitioner could be right for you! This is a really key teaching role, as those early years of development are so important in setting children up for success in the future.
So, what does the role involve?
- Looking after the day-to-day needs of young children – changing, feeding etc.
- Organising fun activities to engage their growing brains and stimulate their educational, emotional, and physical development
- Monitoring progression and creating reports to share with parents and colleagues
- Safeguarding and reporting concerns
